Many people are aware that John’s Gospel greatly stresses Jesus’ deity. He is identified with the Word incarnate; and from all eternity that Word was God (1:1). In a moment of high drama, Thomas worships the resurrected Jesus in terms rightly applicable to God alone: “My Lord and my God” (20:28); and Jesus accepts this ascription of deity and pronounces a blessing on those who come to similar faith without requiring similar proof (20:29).
